Gelded male llamas are probably the most versatile animals for the person not interested in breeding. If you want animals to take for walks, use as guardians for goats, sheep, alpacas or to pack into the mountains the gelded male llama is ideal.
Hidden Valley Farm does not automatically geld the males not destined for our breeding program. Most are of a quality to make good herd sires for the person interested in breeding. Mostly our customers determine which males are to be geldings as they purchase them for activities other than breeding.
Hidden Valley Farm will, on request, keep a male that has been sold and work with the customers vet or ours to have the llama gelded on the premises and allowed to heal over several days before delivery. We believe this cuts down on the stress as the llama is going through this trauma in familiar surroundings.
The earliest that a llama should be gelded is 2-21/2 years (we prefer 21/2) That is simply based on experience and not a scientific study.
