MALE LLAMAMale llamas are interesting to raise. They are like a lot of animals in their early play with each other and tend to be a bit more pushy than their female llama counterparts. It does not take long for the play to take on the aspects of combat and by age 2 male llamas are tousling like school boys and by 2 1/2 it can get quite serious. It is at about this point that their fighting teeth are removed so they do not seriously hurt each other.

In the wild the top male llamas control the best eating areas and attract the most females. It is only a small percentage of male llamas that get to pass on their genes while the rest live in large bachelor herds and many/most never get to breed. Male llamas can be quite vocal as they vie for their position in the hierarchy so keeping several together can be noisy at first. It usually takes about a week for things to settle down before every male llama knows his place. Of course if you introduce any newcomer to the group it all starts up again until things are sorted out. This probably sounds more ghastly than it really is and it can be quite entertaining as well.

Male llamas, as in the wild, mark their territory with their dung piles. This is a good thing if you are the care giver because they are easy to clean up after.

The male llamas at Hidden Valley Farm come in a variety of colors and attitudes. Not all of the male llamas on the farm are used for breeding though most are definitely herd sire quality.

The males to be gelded are chosen primarily for the task they are to perform and at the buyers request. An example would be male llamas that are to be guardians for sheep, goats or alpacas.

Some buyers of pack llamas also prefer that they be gelded but it is not necessary for the task. Many of our herd sires have taken a turn or two as a pack llama. If however you are also packing with female llamas it is a good idea to geld the males.

Because of the gentle nature of these animals male llamas as well as female llamas can be used for school and nursing home visits, 4-H projects or just to take for a walk and hang out with.
